Warning: Mirrors reveal closer things about us.
Is beauty defined by what appears? By what we see when we look in the mirror? Is it defined by a perfect outfit or trend? Or is it perhaps deeper? Is beauty external at all? Perhaps this seems like an odd question because in our culture we tend to esteem based on the external. We pick that perfect dress based not on how well the seam is sewn, but by how it looks. We choose the objects that adorn our houses by what they look like. Stick with me I think this is going somewhere. What if we were merely defined by the external. How many times do we see our self worth in the mirror?
I struggle with this and I think it is a worthy concept to ponder and analyze how we think and feel. The mirror does not reveal who we are based on the external. Does it hold weight though when we seek to define ourselves by looking in it? Looking in the mirror reveals to me that I still have a lot to deal with in regards to pride, selfishness, and self esteem.
True beauty is internal. This beauty shines through us. This contradicts the notion that the mirror holds any weight at all. The challenge then in regards to beauty is to seek to redefine the way we see it. Perhaps if we shifted the focus from the mirror and all the stuff that fits our current notion of beauty, we could actually experience the truth. Beauty that is found in sacrifice, forgiveness, repentance, one that is defined not by a culture but by truth.
