Bible Verses: Ecclesiastes

This week the Bible Verses series will conclude the brief study of Ecclesiastes. Next week the series will begin in The Song of Solomon. To conclude Ecclesiastes this week will focus on the value of wisdom. What is wisdom, what does this passage say about wisdom? May this passage dwell deep in our hearts and may the Holy Spirit change us though the Word. May we see wisdom in a new way and apply it.

Ecclesiastes 9:13-18

"I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me. There was a little city with few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siegeworks against it. But there was found in it a poor, wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man. But I say that wisdom is better than might, though the poor man's wisdom is despised and his words are not heard. The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of rulers among fools. Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good."

This passage really moves my heart and causes me to humbly analyze my own life. At times pride causes me personally to act more like a ruler with a loud voice than a humble servant of the Lord. Wisdom as found in this passage does not cause the poor man to be rich or offer him many extrinsic rewards, in turn however it delivers the city. His humble words of wisdom deliver the city. He does not receive accolades or praise but rather is despised. His words are not heard. This is so different from how we treat knowledge now. Now we expect an accolade or praise or some sort of reward for what we deem as wisdom. However wisdom comes from the Lord, not from our own knowledge. This prompts me to repentance for times I viewed my own knowledge as wisdom, when that was simply empty information. May this passage challenge us to seek God for the truth, to proclaim His truth, and to humbly submit to His guidance.
